Katie Schaeffer & Leea Logston
2004 - They planned and held a foster child sibling reunion for more than 60 siblings separated in foster care. The siblings e reunited during a weekend retreat that aims to strengthen family bonds. Leea and Katie conceived the Celebration Weekend though they are not foster children and aren't part of a foster family. But they saw a need to bring together siblings who lost their parents and then each other.
Of the 6,500 children in Oklahoma foster homes, about half are separated from siblings.
Logston said she was saddened to learn of the thousands of children who suffer abusive or neglectful parenting, then are separated from their brothers and sisters after the state intervenes.
"I'm sure there are a lot of kids in our school in foster homes," said Logston, a junior at Westmoore High School. "It puts a different perspective on it. My family is very active in my life. I don't know what I'd do without them
